James Spooner is an award winning author, illustrator, filmmaker, and tattoo artist. He is the founder of the Afropunk Festival and wants nothing to do with it. For better or worse, his passion for D.I.Y. and punk rock culture permeates every aspect of his life. His graphic novel, The High Desert is the 2023 recipient of the American Library Association's Alex Award. Spooner directed the seminal documentary Afropunk. His co-edited the anthology of entitled, Black Punk Now. His forthcoming book will be published with Pantheon.
